Joint Projects
The Global Campus conducts a wide range of joint research projects on globally significant topics, explored through diverse regional perspectives.
Advancing Child Rights Strategic Litigation (2020-2023)
UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty (2016-2019)
This global initiative provides an in-depth analysis of the circumstances surrounding children held in various forms of detention worldwide, including in criminal justice systems, migration-related detention, institutions, and armed conflict settings. It highlights the severe and lasting impact that detention has on children’s physical and mental health, development, and future opportunities. The study emphasises that detention should only be used as a last resort, recommending alternatives to deprivation of liberty that prioritse children’s rights and well-being. It also urges governments to uphold international legal standards and work towards reducing the number of children in detention.

e-NACT (2018-19)
The e-NACT (e-learning National Active Charter Training) project, supported by the EU DG Justice, developed a training methodology aimed at fostering a shared culture of fundamental rights. By bringing together legal practitioners, academics, and peers from different countries, the project facilitated the exchange of challenges and best practices regarding the application of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Through this collaborative process, participants gained deeper insights and new tools to more effectively apply the Charter in their work. The project helped strengthen cross-border understanding and expertise in fundamental rights law.

FRAME (2014-2017)
Funded by the EU’s 7th Framework Programme and coordinated by KU Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies, the Fostering Human Rights Among European Policies (FRAME) project brought together over a hundred scholars from 19 research institutes to examine how to enhance human rights within European policies. It aimed to develop a comprehensive EU human rights policy by creating a knowledge base, assessing the EU’s contributions to global governance, and providing tools and policy proposals for integrating human rights into EU actions. FRAME ultimately sought to offer solutions and guidance for policymakers to improve human rights promotion.

Global Classroom series
A flagship student-centred research initiative, the Global Classroom programme unites students, professors, and experts from the Global Campus regional programmes to engage in collaborative research on a pressing global topic. Each year, participants conduct team-based research, culminating in a week-long conference to explore the issue through various regional perspectives. This event encourages inter-regional academic dialogue and addresses global human rights challenges.
